Types of Ticks Native to Florida

Several species of ticks are native to Florida, with the most common being the American dog tick, the brown dog tick, and the lone star tick.

  • American dog ticks are typically found in wooded areas and grassy fields, where they latch onto passing animals, including dogs and humans.

  • Brown dog ticks, as their name suggests, primarily infest dogs and can be found indoors, especially in areas frequented by pets.

  • Lone star ticks prefer wooded or grassy habitats and are known for their distinctive white spot on the female's back.

The Dangers of Ticks

Ticks are more than just nuisance pests; they can transmit a variety of diseases to both animals and humans through their bites. In Florida, tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis pose significant health risks to those exposed to infected ticks. Symptoms of these diseases can range from mild flu-like symptoms to more severe complications, making tick prevention and control essential for public health.

Hazards of Fleas

Fleas are small, wingless parasites that can be dangerous to humans and pets in several ways:

    • Bites: Flea bites can cause discomfort, itchiness, and irritation. Scratching the bites can break the skin and lead to infections.

    • Diseases: Fleas can carry and transmit diseases to humans and pets, including:

      • Flea-borne typhus: A bacterial infection that can cause a rash to appear on the trunk, arms, and legs. It's most common in California, Hawaii, and Texas.

      • Plague: Fleas are known to transmit bubonic plague from wild rodents to humans in some parts of the world.

      • Cat scratch disease: A disease that fleas can transmit

    • Tapeworms: Fleas can spread tapeworm larvae to animals and people.

  • Allergic reactions: Some people and animals may develop an allergic reaction to flea bites, resulting in rashes or severe itching. Pets might have a reaction and lose their fur, or worse.

  • Anemia: Severe flea infestations can cause anemia in pets due to blood loss.

  • Parasites: In rare cases, fleas can spread parasites to animals and people if swallowed. Young children are more likely to get parasites from fleas because they spend more time on the floor where fleas like to hide.

To treat flea bites, you can try an over-the-counter anti-itch cream or antihistamine. If you experience severe symptoms, such as increased swelling, redness, warmth, or pus, you should consult a healthcare professional.
